  • Executive Summary:

  • Walter was related to Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron - uncle and godfather), to Prof.Dr. Ferdinand von Richthofen (geograph, researcher of China 1860/70, who coined the term "Silk Road"and established the discipline of geomorphology; and to Frieda von Richthofen, wife of D.H. Lawrence.

He founded the suburbs of Denver in 1881 when he started the Downtown Denver Real Estate Company, and was also a founding member of the Denver Chamber of Commerce.

After divorcing Jane, Walter then married Louise Ferguson Davies (?-1934).

He wrote "Cattle-Raising on the Plains of North America" (NY: 1885). He failed in the cattle industry, but his book sold well, and he built Richthofen Castle. In 1883, he began construction of his castle, designed after the von Richthofen Castle in Germany. It was constructed primarily of rhyolite, and the estate was contained within an acre of walled gardens. He completed the 21-room residence in 1887. It was the show home for his new suburban town Montclair. In 1885, he founded Montclair, Colorado, and promoted it as the "Beautiful Suburban Town of Denver." In 1898, he built Molkerei (milkhouse), a tuberculosis sanitarium. Tuberculosis victims were promised a cure by drinking the fresh milk, lying in the sun, and inhaling the barnyard effluvium through grates in the milk house floor. Within a few years, the Molkerei was converted to an insane asylum and then as the Montclair community center.

Walter was a true playboy. The adopted daughter of his second wife, Louise Davies, married a relative of the famous German geographer Alfred Hettner, and her relatives lived in Heidelberg, too. I saw her several times, once in her home in Bognor Regis and on her visits to Heidelberg. At the last time I saw her, she told me that she saw my great-grandfather in a six horse coach, driving through London, with two mistresses at both sides
