  • Inquest:

  • 10 Dec 1887

  • Sydney, New South Wales, Australia36,39

  • returned an open verdict. Edward was found drowned off North Head on Friday morning. The deceased, it appears, was 61 years of age, was naturally of a somewhat despondent condition and during the last three to four months has been under treatment for a bite he received from a centipede. About 11 o’clock on Wednesday last he left his home to go to the Medical Institute but did not return. On Friday morning a few minutes before 3, as the steamer, Little Dick was about half a mile off North Head, the engineer, Edward Chigwell, saw a hat floating in the water, and a minute or two later, came across the body, which subsequently turned out to be the missing man. The body was towed round to Watson Bay, and on examination by the constable in charge, some stones and a bottle containing a colourless liquid----mostly water--- together with a couple of shillings in money, were found in the pockets. The general appearance of the deceased indicated that he had been not long in the water
