During World War ll he served as an officer in the army. At the Dieppe raid he was in command of a bren gun carrier, most of the other crew member were either dead or wounded as was John. He had a leg amputated on the beach and was awarded a medal for his courage.

A letter from Yvonne Leatherdale (nee Wilkinson) dated 19th September 2001 confirmed the above, except for the fact that John did not loose his leg until D-Day + 4. For his actions at the Dieppe raid he was awarded the M.M.
