He served in India October 1887 to December 1894 participating in the 1888 Hazara Expedition on the North West frontier – a punitive expedition against the Hassanzai and Akazi tribes after they had killed two British officers and four Gurkha soldiers. He was posted to South Africa in December 1899, where he served until he was shot through his hand at Noortgraacht on 13 December 1900, (cannot identify this location or the military engagement), after which he retired from the army as no longer fit to serve
