He was an officer in the Commandos and at the Dieppe raid he was in command of a bren gun carrier. Most of the other crew were either dead or wounded and he turned the tables on the enemy, but was so exhausted he nearly drowned during the withdrawal. For his actions at the Dieppe raid he was awarded the Military Medal
